If you are willing to confess that you are a sinner, then Jesus is the best friend you could ever have. This is a striking statement that believers can accept. But in Jesus’ day one Jewish sect totally rejected this truth.
The Pharisees were severely criticized by the Lord for they didn’t perceive themselves as sinners. Anyone who wasn’t in their click were considered unclean. But Jesus exposed their hypocrisy and pride (Matthew 16:1-12).
Jesus said that he didn’t come to save those like the self-righteous Pharisees. Rather, he came for those humble enough to repent of their sins:
“They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance,” (Mark 2:14-17).
Since Jesus came to save sinners, he becomes the friend of sinners. Through him, we’re forgiven. So, we strive to obey him out of love. Thus, he becomes our dearest friend. In John 15:13-15,“You are my friends if you do what I command you.”
Heavenly Father, Thank you for forgiving my sins through Jesus, my closest Friend.
