I was organizing some of my old files the other day and made a surprising discovery. I found a neatly-typed paper that my wife wrote when both of us were students at Oregon Bible College in the small town of Oregon, Illinois. The title in all caps placed right at the center of the cover page caught my eye: THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST. Then I noticed at the bottom right hand corner the words:
September 29, 1973
“That’s cool!” I thought as I not only identified the author of the paper but the date on it as well. For according to the date, within only two more months that student would soon be my lovely bride.
The course brought back some nice memories, too. While my wife was taking this freshman course, I had already completed it since I enrolled at the college a couple of years earlier. I really enjoyed this study which was an introduction of all the books of the Bible. And I particularly admired the class instructor, John Lewis, who was also the college’s vice president. Brother Lewis, who tragically lost his life in an automobile accident along with his wife and another teacher some years later, is fondly remembered as a good teacher and former minister in the church.
I guess this is what made the paper so special to me. But what makes it even more special is what my wife wrote in the paper. With her permission, I gladly share what she wrote over 30 years ago:
The second coming of Christ is important in the lives of Christians today. There are many signs in the Bible telling us about Jesus’ second coming. The most important chapters on this topic are Matthew 24 and Luke 21.
The disciples asked Jesus what would be the signs of His coming and the end of the world. Christ told them that it wasn’t immediately at hand and that many shall come in his name deceiving many. He also said there would be wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes which will precede His coming. False prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders for the purpose of deceiving God’s chosen people.
Christ tells us there will be signs in the sun, and in the moon and in the stars and distress of nations upon the earth. The sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine and the stars will fall from heaven. When trees put forth their leaves we know that summer is nigh, likewise, when these signs have been seen we will know that the Kingdom of God is near at hand. God is the only being who knows the day and the hour of Christ’s coming.
There will be difficult times in the last days. Men will be selfish, greedy, boastful, conceited, insulting, disobedient, ungrateful, merciless, violent and irreligious. They will love pleasure rather than God.
The coming of the Son of Man will be like the days of Noah. In those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark. The people didn’t know that was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. This is how Christ will come. Two men will be working in the field and one will be taken and the other will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill and one will be taken and the other one will be left. We should be watching because we do not know the time that He will be coming. We are told to be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when we are not expecting Him.
We have reached a time when there is distress of nations. The world is in a state of unrest and men are troubled at the outlook of present conditions throughout the world.
This second coming of Christ means many different things to many different people. It has a far greater influence on Christians than people of the world. We, as Christians, really have something worth living for. I look forward to this second coming with joy because it will be a time when we can meet Jesus Christ our Saviour face to face.
The return of Christ affects my daily living. I strive to sin less each day for sinners will have no place in the Kingdom of God. I continually pray to God through Jesus that I will be forgiven of these sins and that I will have a place in that kingdom. I hope I will be ready for that day when Christ returns.
So many people in this world do not know of the soon return of Christ to this world. We are told in Mark 16:15, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” It is up to us as individuals to tell these people about the Saviour who is going to soon return.
We can tell by looking at the world today that the Lord’s return will be here soon. When I think of how soon it may be I think about all the people of this world who do not know about Jesus. They need to know before He comes and I am one of the many people who should be out telling them before it is too late. I thank God that I am alive and living in this world and that I know Him and His dear Son.
By the way, my wife got a 27 out of 30 on the paper with a scribbled note in red ink on the last page that said, “You started getting to the point in the last three paragraphs, Diane.” I would have given her a 30 out of 30. Of course, I would have been a little biased. I wonder why???
Good News to you!
